Episode 7: Dead Man’s Profit First

Welcome back to another episode! We have a delightful assortment of books headed your way today, including (but not limited to) 2 Agatha Christie Novels, 3 business books, and a fun book from one of our favorite architects. (It seems bougie to say we have a favorite architect, but it is what it is)

Also, I’m noticing that many of our quirky names have to do with money/what sounds like sketchy ways of obtaining it. Is this a little too strange? We’ll leave that to you to decide.

Anyway, here’s what we read this week:

This week’s book recap: Profit First by Mike Michalowicz

Dune – Frank Herbert

Andrew FINISHED this book this week! He even read the appendix at the end, and he really enjoyed the book. Stay tuned to see what he reads next in the fiction department!

Other episodes that mention Dune: Tipping Point of the Heart, Captivate Like Clockwork, & The Mafia of Extinct Countries

Dead Man’s Folly – Agatha Christie

Update on what we said last episode:  I (Julianne) was right but at the same time I was not right.  That is all I will say.

Andrew’s comments: “Julianne did pretty good with who did it, and the title made sense in a clever way at the end.”

As you can see, we ain’t giving away any spoilers over here! But this one was very clever, I’d rate it in the top mysteries we’ve read by Agatha Christie. Probably not top 5, but definitely top 20.

Cat Among the Pigeons – Agatha Christie

After finishing Dead Man’s Folly, we immediately started this one. It’s another mystery (obvs), this one set at a fancy girl’s school. All I (Julianne) really know is going on is that I’m calling the romance thread for this book! (There often is one, and I feel like we’re due)

Survive and Thrive – John Meese

This book’s about being a successful entrepreneur in any economic environment. Here’s one great thought I (Andrew) have been chewing on from it:

“Profit is a scorecard that tells me how well I’m serving others.”

Take Back Your Power – Deborah Liu

The back of this book proclaims, “You can’t make the world fair, but you can take back your power.”

It’s a book for women in the workplace, and it’s been really helpful for me as I (Julianne) have been trying to navigate life at work.  I started it a few months ago then took a break, but I’m really enjoying it and plan to finish it soon!

Outliers – Malcolm Gladwell

What makes the truly great people, well, great? That’s what Outliers is about.

For example, so far he’s investigated the “first mover” – being the right age at the right time (i.e. America in the late 19th century [Andrew Carnegie, Rockefeller], or for computers being born in the 1950’s)

He’s also talked about the phenomenon of 10,000 hours of practice that it takes to be good at something, and how that affects people’s abilities to become outliers.

The Handbook of Home Design by Laura Jane Clark

We got our pre-ordered copy this week and I am obsessed.  All the heart eyes!

We LOVE Laura Jane Clark because we’re obsessed with this home reno show we found on Hulu called Your Home Made Perfect. They have architects draw up new plans for people’s houses, and then walk them through what those plans would look like in VR before they decide which to choose. She’s one of the architects on there, and she does a fantastic job! (Although, tbh I would probably want to buy a book by any of the architects on that show, they’re all so good!)

Really looking forward to reading it and seeing how the lessons might make our space easier and better to live in. ❤️
